granstudio is a brand new creative, multidisciplinary design studio, headed by Pininfarina’s former head of design Lowie Vermeersch, that combines automotive design expertise with a strategic vision on performance, beauty and functionality.
They create “beautiful things that matter”, and Experientia’s very visual website is the ideal showcase for their projects, inspirations and design talent.
Experientia created the granstudio site to be highly usable and attractive on both computers and tablets, using the gesture of swiping from screen to screen as a key navigation element. The HTML5 site can also run as a full-screen web app on all tablets, regardless of their operating system. Simply by creating a home screen shortcut to the site, the shortcut icon opens the website in full-screen mode, offering the feel of a native app without needing to download it through an app store.
When granstudio began in 2011, they asked Experientia to create a brand new website, which fully expressed their uniqueness in the market as a “new type of creative studio”. In keeping with their motto “Beautiful things that matter”, they came to Experientia to ensure that the site would be aesthetically attractive and highly usable.
Experientia’s design captures the core ideals of uniqueness, beauty and usability, through an attractive design that uses the latest paradigms of navigation and functionality. The site itself embraces strong images from granstudio’s archives, overlaid with minimal text describing their approach and designs.
On tablets, the site can be navigated through swiping gestures, allowing people to move effortlessly from screen to screen. People viewing the website from a regular computer can use arrow keys or the mouse to slide between screens, with the same narrative effect: horizontal browsing for a quick overview, vertical browsing for more in-depth information.
The site, which was built with HTML5, can also run as a full-screen web app on all tablets, regardless of their operating system. Simply by creating a home screen shortcut to the site, the shortcut icon can be tapped to open the website, which then runs in full screen mode, offering the feel of a native app without needing to download it through an app store.
Prototyping and testing
Experientia worked closely with the granstudio team to develop the site concept, design and content. Our technical team then created the website prototype, and then carried out heuristic evaluations to identify and fix errors or usability issues, and optimization efforts to ensure the site would run smoothly on all browsers and devices. The website went live in May 2012.
Experientia designed the concept, information architecture and graphic design of the granstudio website, collaborated on the content of each page, and implemented the programming and optimization of the final site.
In addition, the Experientia team trained granstudio in how to use the back-end to add new content to the site, and linked it with Google analytics to track site statistics.
The final website is online at www.granstudio.it. To use it as a full-screen app on a tablet, it only needs to be saved as a bookmark.
