I hope this magazine will be open to everybody. ACM is very valuable, but will have a far better valuability once it is open.

I'm glad this debate is taking shape in the ACM platform. Historically, we know that we express ourselves in order to be heard - and not for profit. The imposition of price on our expression enters only when a substantial cost is incurred for its distribution. The promise of the internet is the removal of distribution cost from publishing and the end of assuming that content (even quality content) can be entirely free. I think those who seek to make a living (or profit) from content can find supplementary business models, but there is no need to bracket those who seek to write, create, express in order to share, inspire, be heard, and be responded to along with them.

Whether or not Interactions should have open access is certainly an interesting discussion. The point I would like to add is that even for SIGHCHI members (who already paid for the content via the anual fee) the access is somehow restricted.
ACM provides digital access to its publications via the Digital Library and SIGCHI members can access "SIGCHI sponsored" content. However, SIGCHI members cannot access Interactions in the Digital Library, altough PDFs of all Interactions articals are available in the Digital Library.
For some reasons, ACM provides a different online version of Interactions out off the Digital Library available only for Interactions subscribers (a.k.a. SIGCHI members). Isn't that odd?
